DIABETIC EYE EXAMS

Protect your vision. Take care of your eye health.

Living with diabetes means paying attention to more than your blood sugar. Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels in your eyes and increase your risk of vision problems.

At Cooksville Eyecare, we provide diabetic eye exams to help monitor your eye health, assess for signs of diabetic eye disease and identify concerns that may require further care.

Regular eye examinations are an important part of managing diabetes, even when your vision seems normal.

WHY ARE DIABETIC EYE EXAMS IMPORTANT?

Diabetes can affect the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. One possible complication is diabetic retinopathy, which occurs when high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina.

Diabetic retinopathy can develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Without appropriate monitoring and treatment, it may lead to serious vision loss.

Regular eye examinations help identify changes early, allowing your optometrist to recommend appropriate monitoring, treatment or referral when needed.

WHAT DOES A DIABETIC EYE EXAM INCLUDE?

  1. Review of Your Medical History
We discuss your diabetes history, medications, general health and any changes or concerns affecting your vision.

  2. Vision Assessment
We assess your visual acuity and prescription, as appropriate, and discuss symptoms such as blurred vision or difficulty focusing.

  3. Retinal Examination
We examine the retina and relevant structures at the back of your eyes for signs of diabetic retinopathy and other eye health concerns.

  4. Pupil Dilation, When Appropriate
Dilating eye drops may be used to widen your pupils and allow a more detailed examination of the retina.

  5. Personalized Recommendations
We explain our findings and discuss the next steps, which may include regular monitoring, additional testing or referral to an ophthalmologist when necessary.

The tests performed depend on your clinical needs and examination findings.

Your examination is tailored to your eye health, medical history and individual needs. Depending on your circumstances, it may include:

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU HAVE A DIABETIC EYE EXAM?

Regular eye examinations are recommended for people living with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes Canada's general guidance recommends an eye exam once a year unless your optometrist or ophthalmologist recommends a different schedule. Your recommended frequency may vary depending on your type of diabetes, retinal health and individual risk factors.

Even if you have no symptoms and see clearly, do not skip your scheduled eye examination.

IS A DIABETIC EYE EXAM COVERED BY OHIP?

Eligible patients with diabetes may qualify for OHIP-covered eye examinations in Ontario.

Adults aged 20 to 64 with diabetes are eligible for one major eye examination every 12 months, along with up to two eligible follow-up minor assessments, subject to OHIP requirements.

Different coverage rules apply to children and seniors. Eligibility, covered services and any additional testing fees depend on your circumstances.

Contact Cooksville Eyecare before your appointment to confirm your coverage and discuss any fees that may apply.
